Happiness means living here and now

The greatest punishment we can inflict on ourselves is not to live HERE and NOW.

Many of us are so set on autopilot that we lose sight of many things that could bring us genuine joy.

Doesn’t it seem strange to you to live through the prism of the past or the future and not of the present moment? It is paradoxical how we have the PRESENT in every moment, but we subconsciously choose to live in the past or in the future.

Clinically, this style of thinking can lead to depression or anxiety.

Been there, done that. Until I became tired of settling for life on autopilot. I pressed the PAUSE button and asked myself WHY.

The beginnings are the most difficult. We force our brains to face something unknown. We put it in a position to follow a different path than the one it got used to.

So I did nothing new back then, actually. But the same old things with a different attitude. I started to be there 100% for the best or for the worst moments of my life. I started to enjoy every minute of my presence on Earth, even when all the things seem to happen against my ”happiness”.

So my life bacame more and more enjoyable.

The secret of happiness is the ability to live in the present and enjoy the moment here, right now, in this moment. Not when we reach a goal, when he or she will love us, when we will lose weight, when we will have money or important positions. But now, here, as we are right now. With defects, with vulnerabilities, with unfulfilled objectives.

Because this is our human structure, and our happiness can only truly be achieved in the present moment.

How to start to live here and now in 3 simple steps, right now and right here, as you read this?

Acknowledge your existence and be grateful for it. Every second you have is a unique opportunity in life. It is actually a huge stupidity to lose even a second of the present regretting the past or worrying about the future.

Meditate for a few minutes (multiple times a day). Meditation consists of observing the sensations in the body and concentrating on all your senses. Hearing, smell, tactile sense are the ones who really anchor us in the present and help us accept what is happening now.

Manage your thoughts. In our most stressful times, we try our best to clear our minds and we want all the thoughts that do not give us peace to disappear. The mind does not perceive emptiness, therefore we cannot stop thinking. So the healthiest thing would be to strive to make room in our minds, to accept what we think, so those thoughts about the past and the present calm down and make room for those related to the here and now.

Life is available only in the present moment. If you abandon the present moment you cannot live the moments of your daily life deeply.” — Thich Nhat Hanh
